Madagascar Sunset Moth
Chrysiridia rhipheus (Urania rhipheus) from Madagascar.
One of the oldest moths on record, the Madagascar Sunset has escaped many mass extinction events and has lived on our planet for over 6,000,000 years. It is known for its beautiful iridescence of greens and pinks.
This is a day-flying moth that is also poisonous when ingested, so predators like birds or reptiles won't eat it. If you visit Madagascar in April, you might be able to see them roosting in trees by the thousands.
